It was fun ...Thanks Mr. Hamster and Mr. Ingersoll!

It was fun writing this and hunting down all those images. It's not hard to find great work by Colan on the web, which is encouraging--he continues to be one of the more celebrated guys in U.S. comics. It's significant as well, to understand the difference between a great cartoonist and a great illustrator--the objectives and requirements are different, so often people look at stuff like this from an illustration viewpoint and say, "what's the big deal?" But Gene Colan didn't just draw pictures. He made comics. And they were good comics. Or at least, as good as they could be, since he had to collaborate with writers of varying talents.Jed Alexanderhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06833411175703626635noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21101554.post-90908769153415420322011-06-24T22:05:10.631-07:002011-06-24T22:05:10.631-07:00As a tyke I didn't like Gene Colan. When I did start to cotton to his qualities it was in horror (or at least non-superhero) comics.

In this post you chose some lovely pages to represent his work. I am glad I came around as a teen and appreciated the artist's talent, if inadequately.

Truly disappointing to hear Mr Colan's last days were not eased by the corporation he did so much to make a success.Glenn Ingersollhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10674475308395975995noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21101554.post-27560722247530012232011-06-24T12:51:04.876-07:002011-06-24T12:51:04.876-07:00Very nice remembrance, combining the personal with...Very nice remembrance, combining the personal with the historical, the bitter with the sweet.Pinkhamsterhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05791620431728841393noreply@blogger.com
